XP is the OS that chased me away from Windows, because it was so horrendously bad! I used Linux as my primary OS for more than a decade before getting an Ultrabook that ran on Windows 8.1, which was also pretty bad, but when I upgraded it to Windows 10 (for free), it ran so much better it was like a new computer.

My Chromebook with a 7th Gen Intel dual-Core M-7Y30 processor is significantly faster than my quad-core Pi 4B, even though the Chromebook is pushing more pixels around (2400x1600 screen).Īlso, you think Win10 sucks but want to use XP? On what planet is XP better than Windows 10? The general rule is you need a system that is 10X faster than the one you are emulating, and when comparing an x86 PC to a Pi that usually isn't the case (it's the opposite in most cases).

How well does that work?įinally, the real point here seems to be that with the Pi4, we should finally have enough horsepower to do this without the usual "Yeah, you can do that, but it will be so slow it will take hours just to boot up" complaints.Īs James said, emulation sucks. Note: I have also seen solutions based on running W95/98 under DosBox on the Pi. I think a better solution would be more of a "VM" type solution - like you get when you run WIndows under a VM under regular (x86) Linux. Wine is one of those things that is amazing that it works at all - and it does actually work pretty well (I've used it a lot in the distant past), but it doesn't work with all Windows software, and when you hit a wall, you hit it hard. Note, BTW, that many of the "solutions" end up depending on Wine. So, the bottom line is: What is the best way? I've seen lots of threads over the years on this topic - they all seem to work to varying degrees (not that I've actually tried any of them). Anyway, that thread looks interesting, but rather involved to actually do all the steps. However, note that the actual title of that thread is:Ĭannot Start pcmanfm Using Debian Terminal EnvironmentĪnd I must confess that I got lost in trying to figure out what OP's actual problem was - whether it was a technical problem or a user problem. That said, the following thread looked very interesting: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=275998&p=1672251&h. But I'd like to get it working on a Pi as my next project. Note: If you feel like bashing the desire to run Windows, don't bother posting here.ġ) I am in a situation where I'd actually like to get this going mostly because, given that W10 is cr*p, it's not really possible to buy a Windows PC or laptop on the regular market these days.Ģ) The best way to do this is probably to buy an x86 based SBC without any OS and get Windows running there.
